Herd Management

 Biosecurity

We have many precautions for biosecurity, as we show our herd we annually test for CAE, CL, and Johnes. At shows we are as clean as possible. We bring a large tarp to completely cover floor and walls of the pen preventing any mingling with neighbors, and everyone gets a foot bath before setting foot back into the pen at home! We do not allow any touching or petting without permission, and hand sanitizer if we allow it.

To disinfect pens at shows we use Synergize.

No one is allowed in our pens at home.

Feed

I am a big believer in quality hay, and forage. That is the #1 way to have healthy and happy animals. We feed Alfalfa/Orchard hay from a local seller with consistently nice hay! The ladies barely waste this hay which is a huge plus.

Everyone gets 1x daily mob feeding of Blue Seal 18%, Alfalfa pellets, and Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (BOSS).

Purina loose minerals are offered to everyone 24/7/365. Fall of 2023 we also started offering kelp mixed with some minerals which everyone seems to love!

Our milkers get a mix of Blue seal 18%, BOSS, Alf, and a senior all-stock that our local feed mill produces, it has worked wonderful for our ladies!

Vaccines & Parasite Protocol in kids.

CD&T (Clostridium Perfringes types C + D, and Tetanus vaccine) is given annually to the entire herd, kids getting it for the first time will have a two series, first shot then twenty one days later their second booster. Bred doe’s get their shot roughly twenty one days before kidding to cover the kids until their first round.

All kids staying on property are put on a daily Coccidia prevention (we use CalfPro). Coccidia prevention is an important role as a breeder to have a healthy herd without stunted animals.
